Alliance DC2 mouthpiece best so far

Posted by Frank Meredith on 3rd Jun 2021

I finally broke down and bought a DC2. I’d been playing the Wick/Mead 3U and Alliance 2, depending on the horn (Adams E1 with Sterling bell, Adams E2 with trigger, or Besson Sovereign 967 with trigger) and the piece. There was no single combo that worked well enough for me that I would sell two of the horns.
After 3 days on the DC2, I’m optimistic that I’ve found my best set up thus far: the DC2 and the E1 (with the receiver adapter dialed out 2-1/2 revolutions) work extremely well for me.
The first thing I noticed: enhanced projection. The sound has a solid core, even now as I’ve backed off a bit on the intensity of the airstream. The slotting is even better now, and the only intonation issues are minor: the usual F-Eb sequence above middle C. The high range is easier to play and I don’t sacrifice any response in the other registers.
It also surprised me that the DC2 feels like I’m playing a significantly smaller mouthpiece, yet the 3 main specs are identical to the Alliance 2 (which is why I put off trying the DC2 for so long.)
It will be at least another week before I feel confident that the “honeymoon” period adapting to the new mouthpiece is over. Since the 26.4mm rim is a constant, I’m very optimistic.
(I play bass trombone in symphony & opera for my main gig, thus the large euphonium mouthpieces.)
